McAfee, part of Intel Security, is one of the most popular brands in the IT security niche. Founded in 1987, the company has since then grown to become a household name, with people paying a premium for its products.
Today, the company announced the newest line of 2015 consumer security suites, which have been beefed up to address new threats and to provide added security for potential digital threats. The McAfee line of 2015 consumer security suites includes McAfee AntiVirus Plus 2015, McAfee Internet Security 2015, and McAfee Total Protection 2015.
Additionally, it also includes McAfee LiveSafe, which is a tool that offers consumers protection across all devices – desktop computers, laptops, smartphones, and tablets. McAfee LiveSafe is being touted as the next generation in digital security. It offers cutting edge technology including voice and facial recognition software, which obviously decreases the chances of unauthorized access to your devices. It also takes advantage of the cloud – which they dub a “secure cloud storage vault” – where consumers can store sensitive material. Also, if you’re the type who can’t remember all your passwords and prefer a password manager to do the remembering for you, then McAfee LiveSafe can help you with that, again with the help of the cloud.
According to Gary Davis, chief consumer security evangelist at McAfee:
“With the proliferation of connected devices and as consumers connect with more devices, the security needs will dramatically change and evolve. With this in mind, we remain deeply committed to delivering innovations that safeguard the digital lives of consumers across the devices they use wherever they choose to connect.”
Indeed, the average modern household has more than one mobile device and maybe a desktop computer or a laptop. Looking at trends, the number of digital devices such as laptops, phones, and tablets per household will only increase in the future; and the need for a security service will also increase.
The question that remains is whether the new 2015 consumer security suites that McAfee offers is worth it. McAfee LiveSafe, for example, costs $79.99 and offers:
Complete antivirus protection
- Protect against the latest viruses, malware, and online threats
- Safely surf and search the web—be warned before you click
- Keep your children safe online with parental controls
Unlimited* cross-device protection for all your devices
- One solution with unlimited* protection for all the devices you own
- Protect your all your PCs, Macs, smartphones, and tablets
- Easily manage and monitor all your devices from one place
Plus all the other features mentioned earlier. What’s worth taking a closer look at is the (*), which almost always means a catch. In this case, the (*) = *Subject to limitations on reasonable use and purpose of the product. What that means exactly, one has to read the fine print, which the average person does not, I think.
So, with this good news – beefed up digital security with the new McAfee 2015 consumer security suites – comes a grain of salt from us: before you buy, read the fine print or get in touch with customer service to make sure you know what you are buying and that your expectations will be met. That will save you dissatisfaction and the headache that comes with it down the road.
